TRUTH UNDER FIRE: ISRAEL’S KILLING AND SILENCING OF JOURNALISTS
We cannot continue to wait until Israel has killed all the journalists to speak up or demand access.
More than 130 journalists’ and media workers' lives have been taken by Israeli Forces since the start of the Israel-Gaza war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Just over the weekend, the CPJ death toll increased by three. Israel has refused to allow international journalists to freely enter Gaza following the invasion of Israeli troops and the subsequent killing of tens of thousands of civilians. Journalists are under attack. Journalism is under attack. As an industry, we must stand together.
The Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association (AMEJA) has compiled a fact sheet documenting statistics, quotes from journalists, and analysis from non-profits to plainly illustrate the unacceptable toll this war has taken on journalism, and Palestinian journalists in particular. All facts and quotes are sourced and linked - mainly from the Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, and the United Nations.
We ask our journalism colleagues at the White House to call on the Biden administration to demand Israel stop killing journalists, hold them accountable for those they have killed, evacuate injured journalists immediately, and allow international media entry to the Gaza Strip.
We ask our colleagues in international bureaus to press Israel to do the same.
And we ask our colleagues everywhere to stand with us in speaking out about our colleagues who are being killed in Gaza, while we are banned from joining them to document what is happening on the ground.
